Our
philosophy

What can war teach us about ourselves? And can understanding conflict change who we become?

When we look closely at a decision made in war, we often find a familiar human problem. Pride makes unwelcome advice difficult to hear. Success encourages a commander to take risks he would once have questioned. Someone has to decide whether holding firm still serves a purpose, or whether they simply don’t want to admit a mistake.

We can read about these decisions centuries later and recognize something of ourselves. Our circumstances may be very different, but we know how difficult it can be to think clearly when we have something to lose.

That connection draws us to the study of war. We begin by asking why someone acted as they did. Eventually, we have to wonder whether we would have seen things more clearly, or made the same mistake for reasons that seemed perfectly sensible at the time.

War has left us a wealth of thought about leadership, courage, ambition, judgment, and the limits of power. Much of it is scattered across histories, military manuals, letters, and philosophy. Finding it takes time. Making sense of it often means working through unfamiliar language and events we know little about. Ideas that could help us understand our lives remain out of reach for many of us.

At Mind of War, we publish books that bring that knowledge within reach. My work as editor is to select ideas worth our attention, check their sources, and provide the background and explanation to help us understand them and consider what they mean for our own lives.

They’re books to return to. As our experience grows, we find more in them and more to ask of ourselves.
